Delphi “the Navel of the Earth”

 

Delphi was a Temple/sanctuary/monument/tomb. Delphi is at the foot of Mount Parnassos, the highest peak in Greece after Mount Olympos. Delphi was the site of one of the most important pan-Hellenic oracles of the Greek world, that of Pythian Apollo, as well as other important sanctuaries. Modern excavations were begun by a French team in 1882.

During the Mycenaean period, the female deity of Earth was worshipped in the small settlement of Delphi. The development of the sanctuary and oracle though, began in the 8th century B.C. with the establishment of the cult of Apollo. Under the protection and administration of the Amphictyony, the sanctuary continued to be autonomous after the First Sacred War and, as a result, increased its panhellenic religious and political influence. The Pythian Games were re-organized, the sanctuary was enlarged and it was enriched with nice buildings, statues, and other offerings.

In the 3rd century B.C. it came under the domination of the Aetolians and later, in 191 B.C., was conquered by the Romans. During the Roman occupation the site was sometimes plundered but was also favoured by some of the emperors. With the spread of Christianity, the sanctuary lost its religious meaning and was permanently closed down with a decree of emperor Theodosius the Great.

Your guided excursion to Delphi begins with you being picked up from your hotel in the morning, you'll then be driven to Delphi along the main highway going through the Veotia region. During the tour you will enjoy a scenic luxury coach ride to the Greek country side, northwest of Athens. You will feel the mystery in the Temple of Apollo where Pythia was seated, giving out her predictions of the future. See the “Castalia spring” with the two monumental fountains receiving water from the spring for the last 3000 years.

After the guided tour we will visit the picturesque mountain village of “Arachova” well known for its famous handmade carpets and quilts. We will enjoy our lunch at the traditional restaurants, allowing you the opportunity to experience the wonderful Greek delicacies, known throughout the world. Towards the end of the tour we continue to Athens passing through the cities of Levadia and Thieves with short stop for Coffee and refreshments once again making sure we refuel ourselves for the scenic route home.
